NST Stone: Types of Natural Stone

We have a lot to be proud of at Natural Stone Traders. From our devotion to exemplary service and family values, to our commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices. Our goal every day is to do better than the day before, but if we had to pick one thing, our stones are what we are most proud of.

And how could we not? We source our stones from the finest quarries, using precision and painstaking attention to detail every step of the way to ensure every piece meets our high standards and is worthy of the Natural Stone Trader's name. From extraction, cutting, and finishing to the final inspection at our yard in Stouffville, we take great pride in our stones because we know how much hard work goes into them.

We offer four unique stones; Sandstone, Limestone, Marble and Granite, available in a range of colours and finishes. This means we have a stone for every project.

NST Sandstones

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock, meaning it's formed by a process called lithification, which involves layers of sand-sized particles of quartz, feldspar, and various other silicates, along with trace amounts of non-silicate minerals, that are compacted and cemented together over thousands to millions of years.

This gives every sandstone piece a unique and beautiful look. Additionally, sandstone is naturally slip-resistant, lighter than comparable materials and cooler to the touch in the sunlight of the summer months. With the right care and maintenance, sandstone is a durable choice that will look timeless for decades to come.

Available in six gorgeous colours and three finishes, our sandstone will make your project distinctly yours.

NST Limestones

Limestone is also a sedimentary rock, but while sandstone is composed of, well, sand, limestone is made up of calcium carbonate, chiefly in the form of calcite, and is given its unique colouring and markings by trace amounts of other compounds, minerals, and organic matter such as plankton, seashells, and vegetation. Similar to sandstone, these materials accumulate layer by layer in seas and lakes before being buried and undergoing lithification, where extremely long periods of time and immense pressure cement them together to form limestone.

This makes Limestone hard and dense while offering a more refined look that can last for decades to come with the right care and maintenance. Our Limestone is available in three gorgeous colours.

NST Marble

Marble is a type of limestone that has undergone a more intense process known as metamorphism, in which much higher pressures and temperatures, deeper within the Earth, cause the carbonates in the stone to crystallize, densify, and harden.

Sealing the marble is critical to maintain its integrity and protect its stunning appearance. When properly cared for, marble is a durable choice that will turn heads for a long time.

NST Granites

Unlike sandstone and limestone, granite is an igneous rock, formed kilometres below the earth’s surface, where pockets and veins of magma flow and churn, slowly cooling over long periods of time, allowing the minerals within it to crystallize and giving it its intense sparkle and colour. Then, over thousands of years of geological activity, the granite is pushed closer to the surface, slowly cooling and transforming to form the stones we are so proud to offer you today. Granite is very hard, dense, and the least porous, making it our most durable offering. Although granite doesn’t require sealing, doing so can enhance and ensure its deep colour and striking appearance lasts a lifetime, a lifetime in which it will never go out of style.

Our Granite is available in Galaxy Black, Dark Ebony, and Raven Black. Visit this page to unearth it today.
